Marketing Agency vs Consultant Which Do You Need?
Agency: a team covering strategy, creative, media and account management.
01
Three models
Agency: a team covering strategy, creative, media and account management. Consultant: an experienced individual who sets direction and often guides your in-house team. Freelancer: a specialist executing one thing, such as ads, design or video. Each fits a different stage.
02
When an agency makes sense
You need many channels running at once, large volumes of creative, and you have the budget for a team. The trade-off is layers: your brief passes through account managers, and the senior people who pitched may not do the work.
03
When a consultant makes sense
You need clear strategy and someone senior hands-on, but not a large team. Consultants suit startups and SMEs in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi who want direct access to the person making decisions.
04
When a freelancer makes sense
You already know what you need and just need execution capacity in one skill.
05
The hybrid model
YKS Productions sits between consultant and agency: I set the strategy and also produce the content myself (photo, video and reels), and run campaigns on Meta, Google and LinkedIn. I work alone, with no office or staff; extra freelancers are hired only when a project genuinely needs them. It suits brands that want senior attention without agency overhead.
06
What affects cost
Scope (number of channels), content volume, whether strategy only or full execution, contract length and ad management complexity. Compare proposals on what is actually delivered each month, not just the fee.
07
Questions to ask before hiring
Who will actually do the work? Do I own the ad accounts and content? How will results be reported? What happens if something isn’t working? Can I see real past work? (Mine includes Vaseline (Unilever), Marriott, KL Rahul and Cindrebay School of Design.)
