How to become a model in India

There is no single door into modelling in India, and anyone selling you a guaranteed one is selling something else. What works is unglamorous and almost free: honest digitals, a small, focused portfolio, being findable by the people who cast, and saying no to anyone who asks you to pay for work. Here is the whole route, step by step.

I’m Yedukrishna Suresh. I direct and photograph fashion, beauty and brand shoots under YKS Productions, and I run YKS Talents, a 100% free portfolio platform where brands and clients find and book talent. I see new faces from the camera side every week. This guide is the advice I give in person: what the work actually is, what clients look at, and the order to do things in so you don’t waste money or time.

01

What modelling work in India actually looks like

When most people picture modelling they picture a runway. In India, the runway is a small part of the work. Most paid days come from brands that need a believable face next to a product. Knowing the categories helps you aim your portfolio:

  • Commercial and lifestyle — brand campaigns, social content, product launches. Warm, natural, relatable. This is where the most work is.
  • E-commerce and catalogue — many looks in a day for product pages. Consistency and stamina matter more than drama.
  • Ethnic, bridal and jewellery — sarees, lehengas, festive wear and fine jewellery. Clients look closely at how you carry heavy styling, your hands and your neckline.
  • Beauty and skincare — close-ups where skin, expression and small movements carry the frame.
  • Fashion and editorial — lookbooks, magazine stories and designer campaigns, where styling and attitude lead.
  • Ad films and video — TV and digital commercials, reels and launch films. Being comfortable in motion, and sometimes speaking a line, matters here.

Modelling is freelance. Work comes in bursts around festive seasons, launches and wedding seasons, and quiet weeks are normal. Most people build it alongside study or another job at first, and that is a sensible way to start.

Commercial warmth — the face most brands are looking for.

Clean studio fashion — posture and how clothes sit.

All three frames are from my own released work. They are different looks, but each one is easy to read: you can see the person, the clothes and the mood in a second. That clarity is what a client scrolling a portfolio on a phone needs.

02

Height, age and looks — what really matters

Height

Height matters most for runway and high-fashion work, where clothes are sampled to a size. For commercial, beauty, ethnic and most brand work, it matters much less than people think. If you are not tall, aim your portfolio at the work that doesn’t depend on it rather than giving up.

Age

Brands advertise to every age group, so commercial modelling isn’t only for teenagers. Plenty of people start in their twenties or early thirties. YKS Talents is for models, influencers, content creators and actors aged 18 to 34. If you are under 18, any modelling should involve a parent or guardian at every step, from the first message to the shoot.

Looks

There is no single “model look”. Brands in India cast for their own audience, and that audience is varied. What every client does look for is that you look like your photos, that your skin, hair and teeth are cared for, and that you are comfortable in front of a camera. You do not need to change your skin tone, your features or your name.

What clients notice on set

Punctuality, taking direction calmly, holding a pose without stiffness, looking after the clothes and being pleasant through a long day. These are the things that get people booked again, and none of them depends on your height or face.

03

How to become a model, step by step

  1. Shoot your digitals. Plain wall, window light, fitted plain clothes, little or no makeup: front, both profiles, three-quarter, a smile, a neutral face, waist-up and full-length. A phone and a friend are enough. My guide to model digitals covers what to wear and the exact poses.
  2. Measure yourself accurately. Height, bust, waist, hips, shoe size. Write down the real numbers. Being caught out at a fitting costs you far more than an honest number.
  3. Pick a direction. Commercial, ethnic and bridal, beauty, e-commerce, fashion. You can do several, but your first edit should look like one clear person.
  4. Build a small portfolio. Six to twelve strong images plus your digitals is enough to start. A collaborative shoot with a photographer building their own work is a normal, valid route. My guide to making a modelling portfolio has the starter shot list.
  5. Make a comp card. A one-page summary with your best headshot, three or four range images and your stats. You can make one free in your browser.
  6. Be findable. Keep a clean Instagram, and put a curated portfolio where clients actually look for talent. A free portfolio on YKS Talents is one option; genuine agencies that take a commission on work rather than charging you are another.
  7. Go to genuine castings. Check who the brand or production is before you go, and read every message carefully. A real casting tells you the brand, the date, the usage and the fee — or will when you ask.
  8. Keep everything current. Update digitals whenever your hair, weight or look changes. An out-of-date portfolio loses bookings at the fitting.

04

Where the work is — city by city

You don’t have to move to Mumbai to start. Brands shoot all over the country, and each city has its own kind of work. I’ve written a page on how casting works in each one:

  • Mumbai — national campaigns, ad films, beauty and editorial; the most competitive market.
  • Delhi NCR — bridal, couture, jewellery and e-commerce apparel.
  • Bangalore — digital-first D2C, beauty and design-led brands.
  • Hyderabad — film-industry crews, heritage jewellery and bridal couture.
  • Chennai — silk sarees, temple jewellery and traditional wear.
  • Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Chandigarh — lifestyle, festive, textile, heritage and bridal work close to where collections are made.
  • Dubai — luxury retail, hospitality, beauty and jewellery for the Middle East, often with international casts.

Travelling for a shoot is normal once you’re working. Just make sure travel and stay are agreed in writing before you go.

05

What it costs, and how models get paid

What starting should cost

Very little. Digitals cost nothing. A comp card can be made free. A small styled shoot can be collaborative. If you choose to pay a photographer, pay for photographs, with a clear brief and a clear number of edited images — never for a promise of work.

How payment works

Models are usually paid per day or per project. The fee depends on how the images will be used: for how long, in which places and on which channels, and whether you have to avoid competing brands for a period. Payment often comes some time after the shoot, on invoice. Before you agree to anything, get the fee, the hours, the usage, the payment date and who covers travel in writing — a WhatsApp message counts if it is clear.

06

Registration fees, scams and staying safe

Genuine clients pay models. They don’t charge them. Be very careful with anyone who asks you for a registration fee, a membership fee, a “portfolio package” tied to guaranteed work, or money to be “shortlisted”. I’ve written a full guide on modelling agency fees and scams in India, with the red flags and how to verify anyone.

Basic rules that keep you safe: research the brand before any shoot; take someone with you to first meetings and unfamiliar locations; agree the wardrobe in advance and never let anyone change it on the day without your consent; and never send private photos as a “test”.

07

Where YKS Talents fits

YKS Talents is a 100% free portfolio platform I run for models, influencers, content creators and actors aged 18 to 34 across India and the Middle East. It is one person — me — not an agency with an office.

  • Free, permanently. No joining fee, no registration fee, no paid tiers.
  • Not a jobs board. I don’t offer jobs. Brands and clients come to the platform to find and book talent, and every booking is arranged through me.
  • Private. Your name and contact details are never published. Every client enquiry comes through me.
  • Read by a person. I read every application myself.

If that sounds right for you, create your free portfolio. It takes a few minutes, and you can update it whenever your look changes.

Questions, answered straight

How can I become a model in India with no experience?

Start with honest digitals shot at home in daylight, take accurate measurements, choose the kind of work that suits you, and build a small portfolio of six to twelve strong images. Then put it where clients look for talent and go to genuine castings. Experience comes from the first few shoots; nobody expects it at the start.

Do I have to pay to become a model?

No. Genuine clients pay models; they do not charge them. Be careful of registration fees, membership fees or portfolio packages sold with a promise of work. YKS Talents has no joining or registration fee and no paid tiers. See modelling agency fees and scams in India.

What height do I need to be a model in India?

Height matters most for runway and high-fashion work. For commercial, beauty, ethnic, jewellery and most brand work it matters far less, so aim your portfolio at the work that suits you rather than ruling yourself out.

Can I start modelling in my twenties or early thirties?

Yes. Brands advertise to every age group and cast accordingly, so plenty of people start commercial modelling in their twenties or early thirties. YKS Talents is open to models, influencers, content creators and actors aged 18 to 34.

How do I register as a model in India?

There is no official registration you need to pay for. You make yourself findable: a portfolio, digitals, a comp card and a profile where clients look. You can create a free YKS Talents portfolio with no registration fee.

Does YKS Talents give modelling jobs?

No. YKS Talents is a 100% free portfolio platform where brands and clients find and book talent, with bookings arranged through me. It does not offer or guarantee jobs, and it never charges talent.
