How to cast models for a brand shoot

Most casting problems are decided before anyone looks at a face: an unclear brief, usage nobody agreed, a model who doesn’t look like her photos, or a fee that changes on the day. This is how I cast for the brand shoots I direct, written for brands, photographers and producers booking models in India and Dubai.

I’m Yedukrishna Suresh. I direct and photograph fashion, beauty and brand work under YKS Productions, and I run YKS Talents, a free portfolio platform where brands find and book models, influencers, creators and actors aged 18 to 34 across India and the Middle East. I’m one person, not a casting agency: every brief comes to me and every booking is arranged through me. This guide is what I check on every casting, whether I’m shooting it or your own team is.

01

Start with where the images will run

Before you think about faces, decide where the images will be used, for how long and in which territory. Organic social for three months and a year of paid ads, outdoor and packaging across India are completely different bookings, with different fees and different paperwork. Usage also decides the kind of face: an image that will sit on a billboard needs a different presence from one that will live in a product carousel.

Write it down as four things: term (how long), territory (India, the Gulf, worldwide), channels (social, paid ads, e-commerce, print, outdoor, packaging, TV) and exclusivity (whether the model must avoid competing brands during that term). Every good casting conversation starts from those four lines.

02

What to put in a casting brief

A brief that answers these questions gets a considered shortlist rather than a pile of profiles:

  • The product and the brand — with a website or Instagram link.
  • The look — age range, the feeling you want, and two or three reference images. References say more than adjectives.
  • How many models, and whether they need to look like they belong together.
  • City, location and dates — including any fitting day and a back-up date for outdoor shoots.
  • Number of looks and the hours you expect on set.
  • Stills, video or both — and whether there are spoken lines or language versions.
  • Usage — the four lines above.
  • Wardrobe sensitivities — swimwear, sheer fabrics or anything else talent should know about before they say yes.
  • Budget range — even a rough one saves days of back-and-forth.

You can send exactly this through the casting brief form; it’s free.

03

Choosing faces: what to check

Ask for current digitals. Retouched portfolio images show what someone can look like at their best; digitals show what will walk onto your set. If they disagree, believe the digitals.

See movement. For anything with video, reels or a lot of candid lifestyle, ask for a short clip. Some people photograph beautifully and freeze in motion, and the reverse.

Cast for the product. Ethnic wear and jewellery need talent who know how a drape falls and how to hold hands and neckline for a close-up. Beauty needs skin and expression that survive a macro lens. E-commerce needs consistency across a lot of looks and the stamina for it. Lifestyle needs people who look like they belong in the scene.

Cast for the audience. Your customers should be able to see themselves in the images. Cast a range of looks when the brief allows it.

Model in a white shirt and dark sunglasses looking down, in soft natural light, from a published YKS fashion shoot
Lifestyle — mood carried by posture, not a big pose.
Model in a pale floral saree with a statement choker necklace against a light wall, from a published YKS shoot
Ethnic and jewellery — drape, hands and neckline do the work.
Model with arms raised in a cropped black jacket and white jeans on a white studio backdrop, from a published YKS fashion shoot
Studio fashion — energy and shape in a clean frame.

Three frames from my own released work, cast for three different jobs. The same face can do more than one, but a shortlist should be built around the one your brief actually needs.

04

Models or creators for a brand campaign?

The two are often confused, and they are different bookings.

  • A model gives your brand a face for content you produce and publish on your own channels. You pay for the shoot time and the usage you agree.
  • A creator or influencer brings an audience. You are usually paying for content they make and post to their own followers, sometimes with rights for you to reuse it. Follower counts, engagement and posting terms become part of the deal.

Many campaigns use both: models for the hero shoot, creators for reach. Just don’t book one and expect the other. If you want a model’s images on your ads, agree that usage; if you want a creator to post, agree the deliverables and dates.

05

What moves the model fee

There is no fixed rate for a model in India or Dubai, and anyone quoting one without asking about your usage is guessing. The fee is agreed per project, and these move it most:

  • Usage — term, territory, channels. The harder and longer the images work, the higher the fee.
  • Exclusivity — asking a model to turn down competing brands has to be paid for.
  • Shoot length and looks — hours on set, number of looks, any fittings.
  • Travel — out-of-city shoots add travel and stay; agree who covers what.
  • Overtime — agree the day length and what happens beyond it, before the shoot.

There is more detail on what it costs to book a model. Browsing YKS Talents and sending a brief are free.

06

Releases, usage and paperwork

You aren’t only paying for photographs. You’re paying for permission to use a person’s face for a defined purpose, in defined places, for a defined time. Put it in writing before the shoot:

  • A signed model release covering the usage you agreed.
  • The fee, payment date and how invoicing works.
  • Wardrobe agreed in advance, including anything sensitive.
  • What happens if you want to extend usage later — renewals are far easier when the original terms were clear.

Every model on YKS Talents is 18 or over. For bookings that come through me, I arrange the release and usage terms with the talent so they are settled before anyone arrives on set. This is practical guidance, not legal advice; for large campaigns, have your own counsel look at the contract.

07

On the day: a set people want to come back to

A good set gets better pictures. Send a call sheet the day before with the address, call time, contact on set, the looks and what to bring. Provide a private changing space, water and proper meal breaks. Keep the agreed hours, and keep the agreed wardrobe. If anything changes, ask — don’t assume. Talent who are comfortable give you more, and they say yes the next time you call.

08

Casting a shoot in Dubai and the UAE

Dubai briefs are usually for luxury retail, hospitality, real estate, beauty and jewellery, often with a mixed or international cast. A few things are different from India:

  • Permits. Shooting at many public and commercial locations generally needs permission. Build that into your schedule.
  • Right to work. Talent need to be legally able to work in the UAE. Raise it early, especially if anyone is travelling in.
  • Heat. From late spring through summer, outdoor shoots move to early morning, late afternoon or indoors.
  • Casting mix. If you need an Indian or South Asian face for one market and an international cast for another, say so in the brief.

Rules change, so confirm current requirements with your production partner. There is more on casting models in Dubai.

How casting through YKS Talents works

  1. Browse or brief. Look through the portfolios yourself, or send a brief.
  2. Profiles that fit. I come back with suitable profiles from the platform, with the work behind each face. If nothing fits, I say so.
  3. Terms agreed. I confirm availability with the talent and agree fee, usage and release in writing. All contact goes through me; talent contact details are never shared.
  4. The shoot. Shoot with your own team, or have me direct and photograph it under YKS Productions.

Questions, answered straight

How do I find models for a brand shoot in India?

Decide the usage first, then write a short brief with the look, references, city, dates, number of looks and budget range. Ask for current digitals before you confirm anyone. You can browse YKS Talents or send a free brief, and I come back with profiles that fit.

How far in advance should I book a model?

As early as you can. Simple single-day shoots can come together quickly, but multi-day shoots, travel, festive-season dates and anything needing exclusivity need more notice, because the same faces are requested by several productions at once.

Do I need a model release in India?

You should always have one. A signed release that states the term, territory, channels and any exclusivity protects both the brand and the model, and makes renewals straightforward. For large campaigns, have your own counsel review the contract.

Should I book a model or an influencer for a campaign?

A model gives you a face for content you publish on your own channels; a creator brings an audience and posts to it. Many campaigns use both. Decide which job you need done, and agree usage or posting deliverables accordingly.

Can I book models in Dubai through YKS Talents?

Yes. YKS Talents covers Dubai and the wider UAE as well as India. Share the location and dates early, because shooting in the UAE generally involves location permits and talent who are legally able to work there. See models in Dubai.

Is YKS Talents a casting agency?

No. It is a free portfolio platform run by one person, me, Yedukrishna Suresh. Clients come to it to find talent, every enquiry and booking runs through me, and talent never pay to be on it.
